Miyíw̓ts – Water’s Edge

Area 58 Innovation

Projects > Public and Private Art > Miyíw̓ts – Water’s Edge by James Harry

“As I visited the Glenbrook Ravine site, I was moved and inspired by the way water had carved away the earth and stone in the ravine, creating intricate shapes that spoke to the history of the land.

With this sculpture, I incorporate elements that belong to Coast Salish people. The design of the inner recessions of the work, highlighted in gold leaf, represents one of the four main forms of Salish design. I have ‘deconstructed’ these forms to mimic the organic shape of the ravine and to represent the Indigenous families that have thrived in these lands. My goal is to create a piece that has flow, geometry, depth, line, and texture, providing an opportunity for new understandings.” ~James Harry

Area 58 is proud to have worked with James Harry and the City of New Westminster on this amazing art project. We consulted with the artist for the texture plan and fabrication of Cor-Ten Steel inlay forms along with plywood and aluminum routing. Along with Engineering, we received and set up the sculpture in shop for support fabrication and application of the 24K gold trigon inlay. We then delivered and installed completed sculpture and forms as per artist location requirements.
